MArine protected areas

A new perspective for our ocean

A marine protected area (MPA) is a zone where certain marine activities are regulated or restricted to foster the regeneration of the ecosystem.

Communities

The main challenge of an MPA is funding. Protection requires surveillance and surveillance requires personnel. With buy-in from communities, local residents can contribute to the protection of a space used by everyone.

Tourists

Mass tourism is a big challenge, but human / nature cohabitation is fundamental. The goal isn't to ban human activities - humans are part of the ecosystem; we just need to find the right balance, for example by limiting the number of tourists in an area.

Schools

Education is key!!

Raising awareness at a young age can increase the level of engagement. Without knowledge, action is useless and knowledge without action is futile.

Fishermen

Artisanal fishers are essential to the sustainable management of the marine park. Respecting no-take zones, fishing equipment etc.

They help keep the ecosystem in balance.

Police

MPA patrols are here to monitor and condemn illegal activities.

Infrastructure

To avoid damaging the ecosystem, pre-installed mooring points can be created where boats can reserve a buoy in advance. This eliminates an important factor of degradation coming from anchors scraping the sea floor.

Marine mammals

Marine mammals are often emblems of MPAs as they inspire and are appealing to the public opinion. However, MPAs foster regeneration of the entirety of the ecosystem.

Fish

A 60-cm sea bass is 150 times more fertile than a 40-cm sea bass. Ensuring the well-being of the species ensures a replenishment of stocks. The positive benefits of protection can rapidly be seen beyond the MPA limits.

Every action counts

Our ocean is one !

We need a global collaboration for its regeneration.
