How it started
A bet to do something different
I didn’t plan to start Naïa.
It started with a question I couldn’t ignore.
I was speaking at a conference about ocean research, talking about how much of it stays locked away — unread, misunderstood, or simply ignored. Then someone in the audience raised their hand and asked:
“So, what would you do about it?”
That question stuck. And what started as a half-joke — “I bet I could explain this better with a comic book” — quickly turned into something serious. I made the bet. But more importantly, I realized something bigger:
The problem isn’t the science. The problem is how we tell the story.

Connecting those dots.
I knew I couldn’t do this alone.
So I partnered with Université Côte d’Azur and their MARRES program. They believed in the idea — that we could take complex ocean science, partner with scientists, illustrators, and communities, and build stories that connect.
We brought in artists, researchers, and Indigenous voices. We built a new kind of team:
one that speaks science, draws feeling, and writes for the world.
This wasn’t just about publishing a book — it was about creating a new way to communicate, one page at a time.

At Naïa, storytelling with data is a strategic approach to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding. Scientific outputs — no matter how relevant — often remain inaccessible due to technical language, fragmented formats, or limited dissemination. We transform complex data into structured, illustrated narratives that clarify key insights, contextualize research, and reveal connections that matter. This methodology doesn’t oversimplify — it distills. It reframes how science is shared, shifting from static communication to integrated, narrative-driven learning. Our aim is to reshape how science is perceived, communicated, and ultimately used — by policymakers, educators, and society at large.
